Over the past two weeks, we have been exploring pumpkins. We read Pumpkin Pumpkin by Jeanne Titherington, and How BIG Could Your Pumpkin Grow? by Wendell Minor. The children passed the pumpkin around to observe the weight of it, and then estimated how much they thought it weighed. They were surprised to learn that the pumpkin actually weighed 16 1/4 pounds! Many different words were used to
describe how the outside of the pumpkin looked and felt (orange, hard, round, dirty, the
stem is like a stick, looks like a sphere, bumpy, and it has lines).
We
discussed how pumpkins grow (from a seed to a
sprout, to a plant, to a flower, to a green pumpkin, and then finally to
an orange pumpkin), as well as when is the best time to plant pumpkin
seeds (late spring or early summer, after the last chance of a frost).

Many of the children were surprised to see the pumpkin float!
The children estimated how many seeds were in the pumpkin. Their estimations ranged from 9 seeds to 1 billion seeds! When it was finally time to scoop out the pulp and seeds, the children were amazed to learn that the pumpkin had 553 seeds in it! Each child scooped out and counted ten pumpkin seeds and described how the pulp looked, felt, and smelled ("slimy, slippery, sticky, icky, mushy, cold, yucky, wet, and gooey"). The descriptions of the outside of the pumpkin were very different from the inside of the pumpkin.
